Inline Tooltips: Hover Definitions for Confluence
Explain terms right in the text: readers hover to see the definition.
Get it on the Atlassian Marketplace →
Overview
Add a short explanation to any word or phrase of a page. Readers hover over it to read the definition without leaving the text, so acronyms, codes and jargon stop getting in the way.

- The text and the explanation are saved in the page itself.

Moving from Tooltips by Sngular
Tooltips by Sngular is an app for Data Center. Atlassian Data Center reaches end of life on 28 March 2029, so if you are moving to the cloud, this app covers the same needs in Confluence Cloud.
Tooltips made with the other app are not converted. Recreate them with the Tooltip macro: edit the page, place the cursor on the term, type /Tooltip and fill in Text on the page and Tooltip.
This app adds tooltips to text. Tooltips on images are not supported.
If you use the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant, you can choose this app as the cloud alternative to Tooltips by Sngular when you assess your apps.
Limitations
- The explanation is plain text.
- Anyone who can read the page can read its tooltips.
- Without an active license, the text is shown without the tooltip.
Permissions
The app asks for no Confluence permissions.
Data and privacy
The app stores nothing and has no backend: the text and the explanation are saved in the page as macro settings. No data leaves Atlassian. See the privacy policy.
Troubleshooting
The app says it needs an active license
The app is paid and checks the license on every request. Ask your site administrator to check the app's subscription in the administration of Jira or Confluence (Apps → Manage apps). During a free trial the app works normally.
